Imagine the warm water running down your body, your muscles relaxing, your hands working your sponge saturated with soap lather all over your body, the calming sound made by soapy water hitting the floor, the “I can’t breathe” feeling when the water has been hitting your face for a while, the burst of fresh air when you peek your nose out of the water stream (Some people are that playful, like me) and you want to stay in the shower forever.

Cleanliness is the most important part of our daily routine. One of the steps we daily take for maintaining our bodies clean is getting a shower. It rinses off any residue that we might pick up on the street; it washes away any bacteria, or particles that could harm us eventually, and it is one of the daily routines for the relaxation of our body. As simple as it is to take a shower, there are lots of wrong habits mixed in which although intended for good tend to be harmful to the skin.

1. Addiction to hot showers
Most people wouldn’t even dream of standing in cold water for more than a second, let alone taking an entire shower in water that is anything less than steaming hot. Hot water also gets rid our body’s natural oils and moisturizers. Still, cold water showers can actually be really beneficial for your skin and hair, and you only need 30 seconds under a cold stream to see a difference. Those with skin conditions such as acne or rosacea may also find that washing their face with hot water can cause excessive redness and irritation—it could even burst a blood vessel in your face if you wash too aggressively. A quick blast of cold water is said to improve your immune function, increase your metabolism, and increase the amount of stress you can tolerate.

2. Excessive scrubbing
The regular and intensive scrubbing of our skin might not prove to be a good thing if we are stripping our skin of the healthy cells, because at the end we are making it to be irritated, extra sensitive and vulnerable to any outer agents. Any protection our skin has will be scrubbed away. Try a moderate use of the exfoliating sponge and do not over do it. At the end of the day, take care of your skin in the way that suits you best, but try not to over-wash yourself, as that can cause the most problems with your skin.

3. Skipping the Moisturizer
Moisturizer is absorbed just a little bit better when your skin is nice and warm, and you will also want to replenish any moisture your skin lost from being in that hot water.

4. Using harsh soaps
The skin might be so sensitive that it requires special soaps, or just a regular type of soap. We shower thinking that we are cleaning off any dirt and grime we absorbed through the day, when in fact there is no need to apply extreme chemicals onto our skin to strip it off of everything.

5. Using Scented Soaps
Anyone who notices their skin seems particularly irritated after a shower should look to their soap as the first culprit. Fragrances can irritate sensitive skin very easily, so it is best to use something unscented to keep your skin in the best shape. Plus, you won’t have to worry about the scent of your soap mixing with the scent of your perfume to create “questionable” smells. Alternatively, use mildly scented soaps if you can’t do away completely.

6. Using a Soap Dish
Using an airtight container or in-built soap dish to hold your soap isn’t a good idea. Be aware that leaving a bar of soap in one spot could be encouraging bacteria to grow on it—bacteria that you’re then going to spread over your entire body the next time you lather up. Use a wire soap dish or soap carrier that has holes in the bottom so any remaining water can drain away once you’re out of the shower.

7. Using An Old Sponge
I understand we get attached to things especially if we’ve been using them for a while. If you’ve been using the same sponge for awhile now, you might want to consider tossing it. It can harbor bacteria and mold.

8. Reusing Dirty Towels
It is alright to use your towel a few times before you give it a wash, but that’s only if you hang it up to air dry after every single use. Just like your sponge, dead skin cells can cling to your towel and when it doesn’t dry properly, there’s a big risk for bacterial growth.

9. Rubbing Towels on Your Skin and Hair
Some choose to just wrap their towel around themselves and wait to air dry while doing other things—putting in contacts, applying moisturizer, brushing their teeth—while others immediately start to wipe that water away. As it turns out, rubbing a towel against your skin is not the best thing for it, and dermatologists actually recommend that you use a patting motion to dry your skin. For anyone with long hair who likes to wrap their towel around their head like a cocoon, know that doing so could be damaging your locks, as well.

Quite a lot of people are guilty of some if not all the listed habits. Not to worry, the truth you apply will set you free. You shouldn’t just shower, do it right!

    Maybe switch cleansers , you could be allergic to something in it. Try taking a bendryl just in case (itll probably put you to sleep though). Try that and stop using that wash, if tomorrow it seems better then you know that was the problem. If it continues even after youve stopped using the wash then you should call up your Dr. As for a new cleanser, try to get something as natural as possible, (fewer chemicals, fewer chances for reactions), I like burts bees, Soap bark and chamomile, it wont lather which is actually god since lather can strip away moisture.
